“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” – Carl Jung
Life’s journey is a winding road, filled with twists, turns, and unexpected detours. Along the way, we may encounter challenges that leave us feeling lost, overwhelmed, or alone. And if there’s one thing that has given me tools to stay sane through life’s dark days, it’s therapy. Perhaps you’re at a crossroad, grappling with pain that feels too heavy to bear alone. Allow me to share my journey through therapy—a journey of healing, growth, and self-discovery. Together, let’s explore what therapy is, what to expect, and the profound benefits it can offer.
Unveiling the Mystery of Therapy:
When I first went for therapy, I didn’t know what to expect. The unpleasant flashbacks from unprocessed childhood sexual trauma attacked me for days and kept me in a cycle of dysregulation. So, I reached out to a friend who’s a therapist and after listening to my fears, she calmly assured me that the therapist she referred me to was gentle, compassionate, and safe.
One thing that the therapist kept reminding me was that, ‘therapy is more than just a series of sessions; it’s a transformative process,’ I needed that reminder because I’m naturally a result-oriented person; I thought I’d feel okay immediately.
I found therapy to be a sacred space where I could unravel the knots of my mind and heart. Though my chaotic mind made me doubt if what I said made sense, to my amazement, the therapist would hear what I was saying and name my pain. Those were my first best moments in therapy. That someone could understand my jumbled-up thoughts and give them meaning made me feel seen.
Therapy is not about fixing what’s broken; it’s about embracing your story, honoring your pain and voice, and reclaiming your power to heal.
What to Expect in Therapy:
Entering therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’re unsure of whether you’re going to be believed. Rest assured, dear friend, therapy is a safe and confidential space where you can express yourself freely without fear of judgment.
I’ve heard some people tell me that they’re afraid that by facing some pain, they’d end up falling apart and things will get out of hand. That’s a valid reason that I find relatable.
When I allowed myself to name the pain that kept me from functioning while reminding myself that I have the support I need to explore suppressed pain, the journey became bearable for me to heal one wound at a time.
In therapy, you’ll have the opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences in depth, guided by a skilled therapist who listens with empathy and understanding. Together, you’ll work collaboratively to set goals, identify patterns, and develop strategies for positive change.
Dispelling Myths About Therapy:
Yoh! I’ve heard weird comments about therapy, some of which can be stigmatizing to some people. I understand that some of us may have been influenced by the movies we’ve watched or some religious assumptions about therapy that may have kept us from seeking the professional support we need for our mental well-being. Let’s address some common myths about therapy:
Myth #1: Therapy is only for “crazy” or “weak” people. Truth is therapy is for anyone who seeks support and guidance in navigating life’s challenges.
Myth #2: Therapy is a quick fix. While therapy can lead to profound insights and breakthroughs, it’s not a magic cure-all. It’s a journey—a process of self-discovery and growth that unfolds over time.
Myth #3: Therapy is only for severe mental health issues. Therapy can benefit individuals dealing with a wide range of concerns, from everyday stressors to more complex emotional struggles.
The Profound Benefits of Therapy:
Through therapy, you’ll gain insight into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, empowering you to make positive changes in your life. For me, therapy helped me know that I am not what happened to me. Though unprocessed childhood trauma silenced me for many years, through therapy, I was able to gain my voice back and now I use it not to shame myself, but to bless what God has blessed in me.
Therapy can help you develop healthier coping strategies, improve communication skills, and build resilience in the face of adversity. It’s a journey of self-discovery—a path toward greater self-awareness, authenticity, and fulfillment.
