Potholes and Uneven Roads

Several years ago, I went on a long road trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to attend my sister’s graduation. It was a 16-hour drive with two toddles to keep me company. All sorts of fun things happened along the way including the car breaking down, but hey, such moments make great stories!

Most of the trip was smooth highway driving.

On the way back, I made a stop for a little over an hour and was trying to get back onto the highway. I re-entered my home address into the GPS and began to drive again. That GPS took me down this windy, and somewhat deserted road.

I began to get nervous when I didn’t see any other cars around me, and started to question the man-made device that apparently knows every road on the map. Each time I approached a junction I glanced over at the GPS…it said nothing. Despite my doubt, I decided to trust my GPS. And sure enough, that windy, lonely, isolated road lead me back to the highway, and eventually home.

As I drove, I couldn’t help but think how this road reminded me of my own personal journey God set me on. Instead of using the smooth, easy highway, God often takes me on journeys with the bumpiest road He can find – sometimes leading me down paths that don’t even look like roads.

The path to your destiny is not meant to be easy. If it were, it would be unmemorable. Expect potholes, fissures, cracks, loose gravel, uneven roads, construction, and many detour signs.

The potholes along the way are annoying but necessary to shake off some character traits in you that are unfit for your destiny. And uneven roads force you to re-centre yourself.

Many times, that road will look like it is leading nowhere. It can be a lonely road because there’s no one else around to flag down and ask if you’re on the right track.

The beauty of a personal journey is that it’s just you and God. Only He knows where He is taking you. Just fasten your seat belt and keep driving.
